千鳥は万葉集の昔から、日本人の心に寄り添ってきた鳥です。なかでも「近江の海 夕波千鳥」と詠まれたように、波間を飛ぶ千鳥の姿は、古くから人々に愛されてきました。羽を広げ、足を引いて飛ぶその姿は、意匠としても早くに完成され、とりわけ琳派風に象られた千鳥は、一目で「千鳥だ、可愛いね」と心をほどく愛らしさを持っています。
波と千鳥を組み合わせた「波千鳥」は、荒波を共に越えていく――夫婦円満・家内安全を願う縁起文様でもあります。高級感のある黒のアクリル台に、京都の蒔絵師が簡易蒔絵の技法で波千鳥を手描きしました。日常に寄り添う軽やかな一挿し。可愛らしさを前面に出すのではなく、しぶきの上がる日本らしい情緒のなかに、金の千鳥が慎ましく華を添えています。
浴衣や夏着物に合わせれば、涼やかな後ろ姿に、さりげない品を一つ。

The chidori (plover) appears in the Man'yōshū, Japan's oldest poetry anthology, and has long been cherished as a motif close to the Japanese heart. As in the celebrated verse on "the evening waves and plovers of Lake Biwa" (yūnami chidori), the sight of plovers flitting over the water has been beloved since ancient times. With its wings outstretched and feet drawn behind, the chidori in flight was perfected as a design long ago; the Rinpa-style rendering in particular has a charm so immediate that many will smile at first glance — "a chidori, how lovely."
The wave-and-chidori (nami-chidori) pattern is also an auspicious motif, carrying the wish to weather life's storms together — for a harmonious marriage and a peaceful home. On an elegant black acrylic base, a Kyoto maki-e artisan has hand-painted the design using a simplified maki-e technique — a light, easy piece for everyday wear. Rather than placing cuteness at the forefront, it gives the golden chidori a modest presence within a distinctly Japanese scene of dancing waves and sea spray.
Paired with a yukata or summer kimono, it adds a quiet touch of grace to the wearer's silhouette — a cool, refined impression from behind.
